Shield Program
Voluntary in nature and focused on establishing and sustaining an elevated level of safety performance through application of SMS principles, the 5-Star and Shield programs promote and help develop:
- A safety culture that holds safety as a core value
- Continuous professional development of individual skills and competence
- Proactive sharing of operational control responsibilities
- Hazard identification and risk management techniques and trend analysis
- Management practices that support the organization's safety objectives
The Shield Program is the culmination point of the 5-Star program; as once an organization has received all five stars, they are eligible to be evaluated for the Medallion Shield. This evaluation focuses on company management, corporate safety culture, and front-line employees to determine if the concepts associated with the stars are successfully incorporated into day-to-day company operations.
The Medallion Foundation Five Star SMS program goes well beyond these definitions. It is a step-by-step approach that provides not only program and process guidelines, but specific training classes, one-on-one company mentoring in the areas addressed by the Five Stars, and auditing to determine if the applicant meets a specific Star requirement. In addition, a final external audit is conducted to determine if the applicant has incorporated the concepts into its organizational culture. Audits are conducted each year to ensure the applicant is maintaining the required standard.
The Medallion Five Star Program includes: Safety Program, CFIT Avoidance Program, Operational Control Program, Maintenance and Ground Program and Internal Audit Program.”
